Biotech Firm Developing Lab-Grown Livers and Kidneys Gains Momentum with National Award

U of M startup Miromatrix Medical Inc., a biotech company developing transplantable organs, recently received an award that aims to accelerate the development of medical technologies that treat kidney diseases.

KidneyX, or the Kidney Innovation Accelerator, is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the American Society of Nephrology.

Eden Prairie-based Miromatrix beat out about 150 other companies to win the award, which came with $75,000 in prize money. To Miromatrix CEO Jeff Ross, it was an endorsement of the potential of Miromatrix's approach to kidney transplants and a sign that the regulatory pathway for its technology might not be as arduous as it once appeared to be.
