The Global Programs and Strategy Alliance (GPS Alliance) and the Research and Innovation Office (RIO) are pleased to announce a new seed grant program in partnership with Seoul National University (SNU) that focuses on catalyzing collaborative research in science and technology. This initiative supports joint projects between University of Minnesota (UMN) and SNU faculty that address global challenges through innovation in fields ranging from AI to biotechnology and beyond.
The UMN–SNU Research Partnership seed grant is designed to strengthen international ties and workforce development by leveraging the complementary strengths of both institutions. Grounded in the belief that global competitiveness requires robust cross-border collaboration, the program focuses on high-impact research within the natural sciences and engineering. For this initial funding round, the partnership emphasizes interdisciplinary work in AI and data science, water and energy, advanced materials and manufacturing, and biotechnology.
Selected projects will receive up to $20,000 in seed funding from UMN, with matching funds of up to ₩30,000,000 provided by SNU (which converts to approximately $20,000). These awards are intended to lay the groundwork for long-term research dissemination and future external funding. By fostering these international connections, the program aims to generate lasting scholarly and societal value across both institutions.
Approximately four grants will be awarded during this funding period. Each project is slated for a 12-month duration, with the possibility of a conditional one-year extension based on project progress and strategic alignment.
