As a nationally recognized leader in technology transfer, we have demonstrated continued growth in nearly all important measures of technology transfer success. In FY2018, we completed a record number of licenses for technologies (230) and sponsored research agreements (86).

The Milken Institute's "Best Universities for Technology Transfer" report, released in April 2017, ranked Technology Commercialization sixth among US public research institutions and second in the Big Ten.
The University of Minnesota ranked 29th on the most recent list of the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted US Patents released by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association, which noted UMN was awarded 75 patents during calendar year 2017, a 70% increase over two years.
In May 2018, UMN's Technology Commercialization office was named one of five finalists nominated worldwide for the 2018 "Tech Transfer Unit of the Year" award from London-based Global University Venturing.
Three UMN startup companies transitioned ownership: Calyxt became publicly traded, Medication Management and Flipgrid were acquired by larger companies.
