The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) is located in the Research Triangle, NC. SAMSI offers a variety of workshops during the academic year and the summer. Programming for Biology will be offered at Cold Springs Harbor Lab, October 10-25, 2016. Application Deadline: July 15, 2016. Designed for lab biologists with little or no programming experience, students will leave the two-week Programming for Biology course with the bioinformatics and scripting skills necessary to exploit this abundance of biological data. The prerequisite for the course is basic knowledge of UNIX; some scripting experience is helpful.
A Workshop on Cereal Genomics will be offered at Cold Springs Harbor Lab, October 19-25, 2016. Application Deadline: August 15, 2016. This one-week workshop in Cereal Genomics will enable participants to take advantage of emerging genetic tools and the completed cereal genome sequences of most of the major cereal crops.
A course on Computational & Comparative Genomics will be offered at Cold Springs Harbor Lab, October 26-November 3, 2016. Application Deadline: July 15, 2016. This course presents a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice of computational methods for the identification and characterization of functional elements from DNA sequence data.
NIH BRAIN Initiative
NIH has issued new Requests for Applications (RFAs) for the NIH BRAIN Initiative. Three new, related FOAs share a common goal of advancing research by creating a community resource data archive with appropriate standards that is broadly available and accessible to the research community. Advances in Biological Informatics (ABI)
"The Advances in Biological Informatics (ABI) program seeks to encourage new approaches to the analysis and dissemination of biological knowledge for the benefit of both the scientific community and the broader public. The ABI program is especially interested in the development of informatics tools and resources that have the potential to advance- or transform- research in biology supported by the Directorate for Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation. The ABI program accepts three major types of proposals: Innovation awards that seek to pioneer new approaches to the application of informatics to biological problems, Development awards that seek to provide robust cyberinfrastructure that will enable transformative biological research, and Sustaining awards that seek to support ongoing operations and maintenance of existing cyberinfrastructure that is critical for continued advancement of priority biological research." Joint NSF/NIH Initiative on Quantitative Approaches to Biomedical Big Data (QuBBD)
"This program is designed to support novel mathematical, statistical, or computational approaches to biomedical big data challenges. Collaborative efforts that bring together quantitative scientists and biomedical researchers are a requirement for this program and must be convincingly demonstrated in the proposal. The program is designed to foster and support new inter- and multi-disciplinary teams of investigators. [...] Successful projects will involve the development of novel mathematical, statistical, or computational models and methodology to solve important biomedical big data problems." Deadline: September 28, 2016; September 12, 2017; second Tuesday in September, annually thereafter.
Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Training Grant Opportunities
The NIH announced three opportunities for predoctoral training in the biomedical sciences that target big data science: (1) predoctoral training in biomedical big data science (T32): RFA-HG-14-004, (2) Revisions to add biomedical bog data training to active institutional training grants (T32): RFA-HG-14-005, and (3) revisions to add biomedical big data training to active NLM institutional training grants in biomedical informatics (T15): RFA-HG-14-006. Application due dates are: July 28, 2014, July 27, 2015, July 28, 2016, by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization. Letter of intent due date is 30 days before the application due date.
More Big Data to Knowledge (NIH BD2K)
The Big Data to Knowledge NIH Initiative seeks to enhance the ability of researchers in the biomedical field to extract more information from their data. BD2K continues to announce funding opportunities to achieve this goal: (1) Early Stage Development of Technologies in Biomedical Computing, Informatics, and Big Data Science (R01) (PA-14-155); and (2) Extended Development, Hardening and Dissemination of Technologies in Biomedical Computing, Informatics and Big Data Science (R01) (PA-14-156). Standard dates apply. Earliest submission date May 5, 2015. Expiration data, May 8, 2017.
SBE Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants
The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), and the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SMA) "award grants to doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question." Deadlines and requirements vary by program.
Digital Information Technology
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's Digital Information Technology program focuses on three sub-areas: (1) Data and Computational Research; (2) Scholarly Communication; and (3) Universal Access to Knowledge. "This program seeks to better our understanding of the relationship between technology, information, and society, primarily through research on and the development of digital information technology for the conduct of scholarly research and public engagement with knowledge. " The Foundation makes grants year-round. Before submitting a grant application, a Letter of Inquiry submitted to the corresponding Program Director is typically required.
