Hypersonics Systems
Hypersonics Systems
Advancing flight physics, propulsion, materials,
trusted electronics, and simulation from
fundamental science to applications.
The University of Minnesota holds one of the deepest academic hypersonics programs in the country. That program is anchored by US3D, a production-grade CFD and thermochemistry solver developed at UMN and used across NASA, AFRL, and the defense industrial base. It is led by nationally-recognized faculty in aerothermodynamics, high-temperature materials, propulsion, and computational infrastructure, with an NSRI program manager assembling teams across colleges, campuses, and industry partners to match faculty expertise to the research questions driving the field. Much of this work carries civilian benefits alongside its defense relevance, from reusable space access and atmospheric entry to thermal protection systems and advanced materials with commercial aerospace application.
