UMN Names New Apple 'Triumph'

Several Triumph apples in a basket in an orchard

The new apple, a cross of Honeycrisp and Liberty, is red with a tart flavor and should be in grocery stores in three to four years.

David Bedford is an apple breeder at the University of Minnesota. Bedford says creating a new apple takes three decades and is almost like hitting the lottery.

"Only one of 10,000 of the seeds the of trees we develop are good enough to make it to the market," Bedford said.
