Director of the Army Research Office (ARO) Dr. Barton Halpern and staff members Dr. Lisa Troyer and Dr. Talia Sebastian visited the University of Minnesota on August 30 at the invitation of Vice President for Research Shashank Priya. In his role, Dr. Halpern oversees the US Army’s basic research agenda and extramural research program.

Halpern visited faculty at several labs and facilities on the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses, met with graduate students and postdocs doing research, and gave an overview of the ARO and tips on how interested researchers could engage with the office.

Halpern encouraged interested researchers to go to www.arl.army.mil and choose the “Collaborate with Us” option, where they will find a broad agency announcement of basic and applied research and funded research opportunities such as Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives (MURI) Program and the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP).
